Cirrhosis: The Silent Scarring of the Liver

By MedPark Hospital

Cirrhosis is a serious condition in which healthy liver tissue is gradually replaced by scar tissue after long-term inflammation or repeated injury. Common causes include chronic viral hepatitis, excessive alcohol use, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. As scarring progresses, the liver loses its ability to function properly, and advanced cirrhosis can become life-threatening, increasing the risk of liver cancer.

Early stages often cause no noticeable symptoms. As damage worsens, warning signs may include fatigue, easy bruising, swelling in the legs or abdomen, jaundice, confusion, or unexplained weight loss. Because symptoms appear late, regular health checks and blood tests are crucial for early detection.

Although cirrhosis cannot be reversed, early diagnosis and proper treatment can slow progression and prevent complications. Management may involve treating the underlying cause, lifestyle changes, medications, and close monitoring. In severe cases, liver transplantation may be necessary.

Protecting your liver starts with prevention: limit alcohol, maintain a healthy weight, avoid infections, and seek medical advice if symptoms arise.
