The Influenza vaccine is recommended for everyone starting at six months of age. It is especially important for those at higher risk, including the elderly (65+), pregnant women, and individuals with chronic conditions such as kidney, heart, or liver disease, as well as those with weakened immune systems.
However, some people should avoid the flu vaccine. This includes:
- Infants under six months
- Individuals with known allergies to the vaccine or its ingredients, and those with severe egg allergies
- People who are very ill with a high fever or serious infection
- Those recently recovered from illness (within 7 days), recently discharged from the hospital (within 14 days), or with uncontrolled chronic conditions
- Anyone with a history of Guillain-Barré Syndrome should consult a doctor first
Annual flu vaccination is necessary because the virus strains change each year. Vaccinating about two months before flu season—usually before the rainy season—helps the immune system build protection against the most current strains.
