The C-suite is transforming faster than ever.
New data reveals that 33% of organizations have already appointed a Chief AI Officer, while another 44% believe the role should be created. Among FTSE 100 companies, nearly half now have a CAIO or equivalent position—and 65% of these appointments were made in just the past two years.
The private sector is leading the charge with a staggering 70% year-over-year increase in CAIO appointments. This isn’t just about technology adoption; it’s about governance, innovation, and competitive advantage at the board level.
In my executive search work across Thailand and Asia, I’m seeing two distinct CAIO profiles emerge. The “Savant” focuses on innovation and product strategy, while the “Shepherd” emphasizes governance and responsible AI deployment. The challenge? Few leaders combine both capabilities—making executive search absolutely critical.
What’s driving this urgency? McKinsey reports that 92% of executives plan to increase AI spending over the next three years, with 55% targeting increases of at least 10%. Boards want dedicated leadership to ensure these investments deliver measurable business outcomes.
For executives and boards, the message is clear: AI leadership is no longer optional. It’s a strategic imperative that requires the right blend of technical expertise and governance experience.
How is your organization approaching AI leadership? Are you looking for a Savant, a Shepherd, or the rare leader who can do both?
