Victoria’s SportNXT Summit a Resounding Success!

In April 2022, AustCham Thailand’s Executive Director, Brendan Cunningham, was invited by our Bronze Sponsor, VGTI SEA – Victorian Government Trade and Investment Southeast Asia, to attend the SportNXT summit in Melbourne, Victoria.
The summit provided amazing insights into how Victoria is ‘shaping the future of sport’ in Australia, with a line-up of speakers including Formula 1 CEO and President Stefano Domenicali, National Basketball Association (NBA) Commissioner Adam Silver, former Foreign Minister (and good friend to Thailand) Hon. Julie Bishop, and the CEOs of all the major sporting codes in Australia, just to name a few.
The panel on “Asia Rising” was especially interesting, with insights into how Asian countries can better utilize their capabilities to host major sporting events in the region. We look forward to seeing greater Thai representation at next year’s event

The summit included site visits to experience the sporting facilities Melbourne has on offer, and Brendan was fortunate enough to attend the Friday practice day at the 2022 Australian Formula One Grand Prix at Albert Park. A wonderful showcase of how Victoria run major events, with a new attendance record at the circuit for the weekend with 499,144 attending it, making it the most attended sporting event ever in Melbourne.

Melbourne is often praised as the sporting capital of Australia (and some would say the world) and this showcase provided the perfect backdrop to the official announcement of the 2026 Commonwealth Games, which will be held in Melbourne and right across regional Victoria.
